Although now de-commissioned this 300 node computer cluster was built and installed by IT Supplies in 1999 for Liverpool University High Energy Physics department. In its time it was the largest cluster system of its kind.

 

A sample rack of this unique cluster system is now on show in the museum at Liverpool University

The brief was to use low cost standard components rather than proprietary products from a mainstream manufacturer. In order to achieve this a computer node was developed which allowed 30 complete nodes to be incorporated in a 42U high 19" rack. Each node consists of a micro ATX motherboard, disk drive and Standard ATX power supply. With the motherboard mounted to the front it allows easy access for monitor and keyboard connection and when necessary a floppy drive and CD-ROM can be USB connected.
